Vaishno Devi in Jammu & Kashmir is one of the most visited Hindu shrines in India — Mata Vaishno Devi sits in a holy cave at 5,200 ft inside the Trikuta Mountains, drawing roughly 80 lakh pilgrims a year. This is a practical 2026 guide to the yatra — registration, the trek vs helicopter options, where to stay, and the 2-day weekend itinerary.

Getting to Katra

  • By train: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station is the railhead. Direct trains from Delhi (10–12 hours), Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad. Vande Bharat Express Delhi–Katra reaches in 8 hours.
  • By road: Jammu to Katra is 50 km (1.5 hours). Buses from Jammu Bus Stand every 30 minutes (₹150).
  • By air: Jammu Airport (IXJ) is the nearest. Daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru. From Jammu, taxis to Katra cost ₹1,500–₹2,000.

The Yatra Parchi (registration)

Registration is mandatory and free. Get the Yatra Parchi:

  • Online: at maavaishnodevi.org — book up to 30 days in advance
  • Offline: at the Yatra Registration Counter, Katra Bus Stand. Open 24 hours.

You will need a government photo ID. Without the Parchi, you cannot pass the Banganga check-post.

The trek

  • Distance: 13 km one-way from Katra to the Bhawan (the cave).
  • Time: 6–8 hours up, 4–5 hours down for an average walker.
  • Routes: Two paths — the older traditional route and the new battery-powered route (no horses/ponies). Both are paved.
  • Free langar at multiple points along the route.

Options for the climb

  • On foot: Free. Plan a slow ascent — leave Katra at 4 AM to reach for morning darshan.
  • Pony / Pithoo (porter): Registered rates from ₹1,000–₹2,000 depending on route segment.
  • Palki (palanquin): ₹3,500–₹5,000 for elderly / disabled travellers.
  • Battery car: ₹350 from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan (the upper 5 km section only).
  • Helicopter: Sanjichat helipad. ₹1,830 one way per person (subject to revision). Book online at the same MVD portal.

A 2-day itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Katra by morning. Check in. Get Yatra Parchi. Visit Charan Paduka and Banganga briefly. Light lunch. Start trek at 2 PM or 3 PM (cooler). Stay overnight at Ardhkuwari (mid-route shelter) — booking required.
  • Day 2: Pre-dawn walk to the Bhawan (5 km from Ardhkuwari). Darshan by 7–8 AM. Optional visit to Bhairavnath Temple (2 km uphill from Bhawan — completes the yatra). Trek back to Katra. Train or bus out by evening.

Alternative 1-day itinerary

Many pilgrims do it in a single 16–18 hour push: arrive Katra by 6 AM, trek up reaching Bhawan by 1 PM, darshan, trek back, leave by 11 PM. Brutal but doable for the fit.

Where to stay in Katra

  • Budget dharamshalas and lodges: ₹600–₹1,800/night.
  • Mid-range hotels (Hotel Pratap Palace, Hotel KC Residency): ₹2,500–₹5,000.
  • Premium (Hotel Country Inn Suites Katra, KC Residency): ₹5,000–₹10,000.

Costs for a 2-day yatra (per person)

  • Round-trip train (Delhi): ₹1,800
  • 1 night Katra hotel: ₹1,500
  • Ardhkuwari overnight: ₹500–₹1,000 (basic shelter)
  • Food at langars + dhabas: ₹700
  • Pithoo / battery car (one way): ₹1,500
  • Trek total per person: ₹6,000–₹8,000
  • Helicopter both ways (per person): ₹3,660 (added on top — total ₹10,000+)

Things to know

  • Mobile phones are not allowed inside the sanctum. Lockers available at Niharika Yatri Niwas.
  • Best months: October to March (cool). April-June is hot, July-September is rainy. Navratri sees record crowds.
  • Senior citizens, disabled, and pregnant women have special quotas — apply through the MVD portal in advance.
  • The yatra goes 24×7 — many pilgrims prefer the cooler night trek.

The honest verdict

Vaishno Devi in 2026 is one of the best-organised major pilgrimages in India — clean paths, reliable langars, working helicopter option for the elderly. The trek is physically meaningful if you can do it; the helicopter is honest if you cannot. Plan a 2-day trip with one overnight near Ardhkuwari for the calmest experience.

Best time to visit Vaishno Devi

The shrine is open year-round. March–April (Navratri) and Maha Shivratri see huge crowds; the comfortable trekking window is March to October. Avoid mid-July to mid-August (heavy monsoon, landslide risk on the track) and December–February (snow blocks the upper sections occasionally, helicopter cancellations common).

Common mistakes pilgrims make

Not pre-booking yatra registration. Online registration through maavaishnodevi.org is mandatory since 2022. Carry the printed slip + Aadhaar.

Skipping the new track (Tarakote Marg). The 6.3 km Tarakote Marg avoids the steepest Adkuwari incline and is paved with shaded sections — strongly recommended for senior citizens and families.

Booking helicopter for one-way only. Single-leg heli (Katra–Sanjichhat) at ₹2,000 helps the uphill, but coming down on foot (13 km) defeats the purpose.

Carrying leather/non-veg food/alcohol. Strictly prohibited throughout the yatra. Lockers near Katra base hold these for ₹50/day.

Darshan options & routes

Foot routes: traditional 13 km via Adkuwari (steeper) or 14 km via Tarakote Marg (gentler, scenic). Ponies (₹800–1,200 one-way), pithoos (₹2,500), palanquins (₹6,000) are available. Helicopter (₹2,000 one-way) covers Katra–Sanjichhat in 8 minutes, then 2.5 km walk to Bhawan.

Where to stay in Katra

Bhawan dharamshalas (Shrine Board) are ₹500–2,000/night. Katra town has hotels from ₹1,200 budget to ₹6,500 premium. Bhawan rooms are essential for attending the 4:30 AM aarti.
