Kedarnath Yatra 2026: Helicopter, Trek & Complete Booking Guide

By Jeetmal Kumawat · June 2, 2026 · 6 min read

Quick answer: Kedarnath Yatra 2026 opens around April 30 (Akshaya Tritiya). Registration via registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is mandatory. Choose between a 16 km trek from Gaurikund (7-9 hours one way) or helicopter from Phata (₹7,750 round trip via heliyatra.irctc.co.in). Best windows: mid-May to mid-June and late September. Per-person budget: ₹26,000 (trek) to ₹35,000 (helicopter) for 5 days from Haridwar.

Kedarnath is the toughest of the four dhams but also the one people talk about for the rest of their lives. The temple sits at 3,583 metres with the Mandakini behind it and Kedarnath peak directly above. The 16-kilometre walk from Gaurikund punishes the unfit and rewards the slow. This guide is only about Kedarnath, not the full Char Dham loop, because Kedarnath deserves its own plan.

This is for pilgrims aged 14 to 65 with reasonable fitness, or older devotees willing to take helicopter or pony service. It is not for anyone who arrives without the IRCTC Char Dham registration, or who plans to “just see how it goes” with the weather. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April 30, 2026 likely) and closes around Bhai Dooj (October 23, 2026). Best windows are mid-May to mid-June and late-September.

Registration, permits and getting there

Mandatory biometric registration via the Uttarakhand Tourism portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) opens in late February 2026. There is no fee, but you cannot enter Sonprayag check-post without the QR code. Carry Aadhaar plus 2 passport photos.

Nearest airport is Dehradun (DED). Delhi-Dehradun flights are ₹3,800-5,200 one-way on IndiGo in May-June 2026. From Dehradun, shared taxis to Sonprayag (235km, 9 hours) cost ₹1,200 per seat or ₹6,500 for a full Sumo. Rishikesh-Sonprayag GMOU bus is ₹620. Train option: Haridwar (HW) is the nearest railhead with Dehradun Shatabdi from Delhi at ₹1,180 (CC).

From Sonprayag, mandatory shuttle jeeps run to Gaurikund (5km) at ₹50 per person. Private vehicles are not allowed past Sonprayag. Gaurikund is the trek starting point.

The trek and the helicopter

The walk from Gaurikund to Kedarnath base is 16km via Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, Linchauli, Kedarnath Base Camp. A reasonably fit adult takes 7-9 hours one way. Pony charges in 2026 are ₹3,000-3,500 one way, palki (palanquin with 4 carriers) ₹6,500-8,000, pithoo (child on back) ₹2,200. All rates are regulated by the district administration and displayed at Gaurikund.

Helicopter service runs from three helipads: Phata (most popular), Sersi and Sitapur. Booking is only through the official IRCTC heliyatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) which opens around March 15, 2026. One-way fares are ₹3,395 from Sitapur, ₹3,750 from Sersi, ₹4,720 from Phata. Round trip on same day is around ₹7,750 from Phata. Operators include Pawan Hans, Aryan Aviation, Heritage Aviation, Trans Bharat. Slots vanish in 90 seconds when booking opens. Touts at Phata offering tickets at double the rate should be avoided.

Where to stay at each stop

Guptkashi: Char Dham Camp Resort ₹3,200, Hotel Mandakini Lake Resort ₹4,500, GMVN Tourist Rest House ₹1,800 (book through gmvnonline.com). Sitapur: Sitapur Camp ₹2,400, Devbhoomi Heliland ₹3,800.

Sonprayag/Gaurikund: Avoid full sleep here, only break journey. Hotel Akash and Hotel Ramoji Palace charge ₹1,400-2,200 in season.

Kedarnath base camp (if you trek and stay overnight): Bharat Sevashram Sangh dharamshala (donation-based, around ₹400 contribution), GMVN huts ₹1,800 (book via GMVN portal 30 days ahead), private tents ₹2,500-4,000. The base looks like a small village rebuilt after 2013 floods. Power and hot water are limited.

Common mistakes Indian travellers make

  • Underestimating altitude: Kedarnath base is at 3,583m. AMS hits people who climb fast. Spend at least one acclimatisation night at Guptkashi (1,319m) before trekking.
  • Wrong shoes: Sneakers won’t grip wet stone. Buy Quechua MH100 or Wildcraft Hiking shoes at ₹2,400-3,500. Break them in before the trip.
  • Booking helicopter outside IRCTC portal: Every year, agents on WhatsApp promise tickets for double price and disappear. Only book at heliyatra.irctc.co.in.
  • Carrying too much: The 16km trek is brutal with a heavy bag. Leave luggage at Sonprayag locker (₹150/day) and carry only essentials in a 20-litre daypack.
  • Trying to do darshan and return same day on foot: 32km round-trip in one day breaks knees. Stay one night at Kedarnath.

Vegetarian food (everything is veg here)

The entire Kedarnath route is strictly vegetarian. No eggs, no alcohol allowed beyond Guptkashi. Bhandara stalls along the trek serve free dal-chawal, kichdi, halwa from Linchauli and Bheembali. At Kedarnath base, GMVN canteen does aloo parathas ₹80, rajma chawal ₹140, Maggi ₹70. The famous Garhwal mandua roti (finger millet) is served at small dhabas in Guptkashi for ₹40-60. Try jhangora kheer at Devbhoomi Vatika in Rudraprayag.

Money, SIM and connectivity

Jio and BSNL work till Sonprayag. Above Gaurikund, network is patchy. At Kedarnath base, BSNL gets occasional 2G. There are no ATMs above Guptkashi. Carry ₹8,000-10,000 cash per person in small denominations for ponies, palki, tips and bhandara donations. UPI works in Guptkashi and Sitapur hotels.
