Maldives in 2026 has two completely different versions you can plan for — the private-island honeymoon resort and the local-island budget guesthouse. Indians get a 30-day visa-free entry on arrival, direct flights from every major Indian metro, and a price spectrum from ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh per person depending on which version you choose.

The visa, in writing

  • Visa: Free 30-day Tourist Visa on Arrival. No prior application required.
  • Documents needed at arrival: Passport (6 months validity from arrival), confirmed accommodation booking, return ticket, proof of sufficient funds (typically US $100/day, rarely asked).
  • IMUGA arrival declaration: Online form to be filed within 96 hours before arrival at imuga.immigration.gov.mv. Free, takes 5 minutes, includes a customs declaration.

Flights from India

  • Mumbai (BOM) → Male (MLE): 3 hours 30 min. Round-trip ₹18,000–₹35,000.
  • Delhi (DEL) → Male: 4 hours 30 min. ₹22,000–₹40,000.
  • Bengaluru (BLR) / Chennai (MAA) / Kochi (COK) → Male: 2 hours 30 min – 3 hours. ₹16,000–₹30,000.

Carriers: IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, Maldivian (national carrier). Cheapest months: May, September, and the second half of November.

The resort vs local island decision

This is the entire trip-planning question.

Resort islands

You stay on a private island where the entire island is one resort. Overwater villas, beach bungalows, private pools, sunset cruises, all-inclusive food packages. Everyone you meet is a guest. Average cost: US $400–$2,000+ per night per couple, often quoted in dollars even for Indian guests.

Local islands

You stay in a guesthouse on one of the inhabited Maldivian islands (Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah, Ukulhas, Gulhi, Fulidhoo). Daily life happens around you. Beaches are public; some have a separate “Bikini Beach” zone for tourists. Average cost: US $80–$250 per night per couple with breakfast — a tenth of resort pricing.

The hybrid 50/50

The most common pattern for Indian honeymooners on a mid-range budget: 3 nights local island + 2 nights resort overwater villa. You get the snorkelling and culture of the local island, the iconic photos at the resort, and the bill stays roughly half a pure-resort trip.

Getting from Male airport to your accommodation

  • Resort transfer: usually a seaplane (US $300–$700 round trip per person) or a speedboat (US $80–$200). Both pre-arranged by the resort.
  • Local island ferry: US $2–$5 on the public ferry (1–2 hours, fixed days only), or US $30–$50 on a tourist speedboat (40 min, runs daily).

A 5-day Maldives itinerary (hybrid)

  • Day 1: Land Male. Speedboat to Maafushi (40 min). Check in to a guesthouse. Evening swim at Bikini Beach.
  • Day 2: Half-day snorkelling at sandbank (US $35) + dolphin watching cruise (US $30).
  • Day 3: Full-day excursion to a resort island for the day (most local guesthouses arrange this for US $80–$120 per person including lunch and pool access).
  • Day 4: Speedboat back to Male, transfer to your resort (seaplane window — try to book a morning slot). Check in, lunch. Evening sunset photo at the overwater villa deck.
  • Day 5: Slow morning. Resort spa or snorkel right off your villa. Seaplane back to Male in the afternoon. Fly home that night.

What it actually costs in 2026

Budget hybrid (₹65,000–₹95,000 per person, 5 days)

IndiGo direct (₹20,000) + 4 nights local guesthouse (₹14,000 per couple ÷ 2 = ₹7,000 per person) + 1 night mid-tier resort (₹25,000 ÷ 2 = ₹12,500) + speedboat transfers + food + 2 excursions + IMUGA + SIM.

Mid-range resort (₹1,50,000–₹2,50,000 per person, 5 days)

Direct flight (₹25,000) + 4-night premium resort with breakfast and dinner (~US $500/night per couple = ₹1,80,000 per couple ÷ 2 = ₹90,000) + seaplane (₹40,000 round trip) + extras.

Luxury (₹4,00,000+)

Premium economy or business class (₹70,000+) + 4-night premium overwater at Soneva, Como Cocoa, or Anantara (US $1,500+/night) + private seaplane upgrade + spa and excursions.

Things to know

  • Currency: Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is local but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Carry small US bills for tips.
  • Alcohol: Resorts serve it freely; local islands are dry (it is a Muslim country). Buy duty-free at Male airport if you want a drink at your guesthouse.
  • Dress code on local islands: Modest in the village; bikinis only at the marked Tourist Beach.
  • Best time to visit: November to April (dry season). May–October has occasional rain but lower prices.
  • Connectivity: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo offer tourist SIMs at Male airport for US $20–$30 with 25GB.

The honest verdict

Maldives in 2026 still works for Indian travellers willing to think clearly about resort vs local island. Couples on a tight budget can have a real Maldives trip for ₹65,000 per person. Couples wanting the iconic overwater photo can do it for ₹1.5 lakh as the cheapest one-night dip into a resort, paired with cheaper local-island nights. Pick the version of the trip you actually want; the country has both.
