Badrinath Dham Yatra 2026
Badrinath is the easiest of the four Himalayan dhams. You can drive right up to the temple gate, no trek required, helicopter is optional rather than essential. But “easy” is relative — the road from Joshimath is one of the most dangerous in India, the temple sits at 3,133 metres, and the weather flips in 30 minutes. Most pilgrims rush through in half a day. The ones who stay two nights and walk to Mana village come back with the real story.
This guide is for families with elderly parents, first-time Himalayan pilgrims, and anyone planning Badrinath as a standalone yatra rather than as part of Char Dham. It is not for trekkers (Hemkund and Valley of Flowers are nearby but different planning) or for monsoon travellers (July-August lands you in landslide queues for hours). Window is May 5 to November 10, 2026 approximately.
Registration, getting there, opening dates
Like Kedarnath, biometric registration is mandatory through registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Free QR code generation, ID checked at Joshimath, Govindghat or Vishnuprayag check-posts. Opening date in 2026 is expected around May 5 (kapat opens on Vasant Panchami announcement).
Nearest airport: Dehradun (DED). Delhi-Dehradun direct flights ₹3,800-5,400 in May 2026. Drive distance Dehradun to Badrinath is 310km, 11 hours via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Joshimath. Helicopter to Badrinath operates from Sahastradhara Dehradun via Aryan Aviation, round trip approximately ₹35,000 per person but slots are extremely limited.
Train: Rishikesh (RKSH) railway station is closest with overnight Delhi-Rishikesh trains. From Rishikesh, GMOU and private taxis go to Joshimath (250km, 9 hours) for ₹1,400 per seat shared.

5-day itinerary from Haridwar
Day 1: Haridwar to Rudraprayag (165km, 6 hours). Stop at Devprayag confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi forming Ganga. Night at GMVN Rudraprayag (₹1,800) or Hotel Monal (₹2,400).
Day 2: Rudraprayag to Joshimath (160km, 7 hours via Karnaprayag and Nandprayag). Check into hotel by 4 PM, acclimatise. Visit Narsingh Temple (where idol stays during winter when Badrinath kapat closes). Joshimath sits at 1,875m which helps adjust to altitude.
Day 3: Joshimath to Badrinath (45km, 2.5 hours but takes 3.5 with army convoy timings on the BRO road). Reach by 11 AM. Bath in Tapt Kund (hot spring at temple base), darshan after lunch. Evening at temple Brahma Kapal ghat for pind daan if relevant.
Day 4: Morning drive 3km to Mana village (officially the last Indian village, though Niti and a few others lie further). Visit Vyas Gufa (where Mahabharata was dictated), Ganesh Gufa, Bhim Pul. Walk 4km one way to Vasudhara Falls (122m drop, sacred to Pandavas). Return to Badrinath, second darshan at evening aarti. Night halt at Badrinath.
Day 5: Drive back to Rishikesh (295km, 11 hours including breaks) or break at Rudraprayag overnight if elderly are travelling.
Darshan timings and pujas
Badrinath temple opens 4.30 AM with Abhishek Puja, then Mahabhishek, Bal Bhog. Regular darshan from 7 AM to 1 PM. Closes 1 PM to 4 PM for shringar. Re-opens 4 PM to 9 PM with Geet Govinda recitation and Shayan Aarti closing the day. Specific pujas can be booked via badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in: Abhishek (₹4,700), Maha Abhishek (₹19,300), Geet Govinda (₹780), Ved Path (₹2,500). Brahma Kapal pind daan involves family priests (panda) and costs ₹500-2,000 depending on tradition.

Common mistakes Indian travellers make
- Doing same-day darshan and return from Joshimath: 90km round trip on a landslide-prone road compresses your visit to 90 minutes at temple. Stay at Badrinath one night.
- Missing the Tapt Kund dip: Many pilgrims rush to temple skipping the hot spring bath. Tradition holds the dip should precede darshan. Water is 40-45°C.
- Wearing leather belts and wallets to temple: Leather is not allowed inside. Carry a cloth pouch.
- Driving non-AWD/4×4 in early May: Roads have ice patches near Vishnuprayag. Book a local Innova or Bolero with experienced driver rather than self-drive.
- Skipping Mana village: Half the Badrinath spiritual experience is in Mana. Vyas Gufa is the closest you’ll get to the geography of Mahabharata.

Vegetarian food on the route
Above Joshimath, everything is strict vegetarian and onion-garlic free. Inside Badrinath bazaar, Saket Restaurant and Mishra Bhandar do excellent thalis for ₹180-240. The temple prasad (bhog) is sold in packets at ₹120 (boondi-mishri-tulsi-batasha mix). Try Garhwali specialities at Joshimath’s Hotel Auli View kitchen: kafuli (a green leafy curry with paneer), kandi (kidney bean curry), aloo gutke. Mana village has a single Sherpa-run tea stall just before the bridge with maggi at ₹80 and the famous “India’s last tea shop” sign for selfies.
Money, SIM and connectivity
BSNL is the most reliable network at Badrinath. Jio works in patches. Airtel intermittent above Joshimath. SBI ATM exists at Badrinath bazaar but runs out of cash by afternoon. Punjab National Bank ATM at Joshimath is more reliable. Carry ₹12,000-15,000 cash per couple for pujas, donations, snack stops on the highway. UPI works at all hotels but not at small dhabas.
