Portugal in 2026 is the underrated European trip — Lisbon’s hilly miradouros, Porto’s port wine cellars, the colonial Goan-Portuguese food connection, and prices noticeably gentler than Spain or Italy. This is an 8-day Portugal planning guide for Indian travellers.

The Schengen visa

Apply through VFS Global for Portugal. €90 + ₹1,800. 15 working days. Documents: insurance, return flight, hotels, bank statements, ITR.

Flights from India

  • Delhi/Mumbai → Lisbon (LIS): One-stop via Doha (Qatar), Madrid (Iberia), or Frankfurt (Lufthansa). 13–16 hours. ₹55,000–₹95,000.
  • Cheaper option: fly Delhi → Madrid, train Madrid–Lisbon (10 hours) or short Iberia flight.

An 8-day Portugal itinerary

  • Day 1–3: Lisbon — Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, Tram 28 ride, Alfama walk, fado dinner
  • Day 4: Sintra day trip — Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira
  • Day 5: Coimbra (university town) on the way north
  • Day 6–7: Porto — Port wine cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, Ribeira walk, Livraria Lello (the bookshop that inspired Harry Potter)
  • Day 8: Douro Valley wine tour (boat or driver), fly out

What it costs (in INR)

  • Pastel de nata + galão: ₹250–₹400
  • Tasca meal: ₹1,000–₹2,000
  • Pena Palace entry: ₹1,500
  • Port cellar tour: ₹800–₹2,500
  • Lisbon Metro day pass: ₹650
  • Train Lisbon–Porto (Alfa Pendular): ₹2,500–₹4,000

8-day budget — three tiers (per person)

  • Budget (₹1,50,000–₹1,95,000)
  • Mid-range (₹2,20,000–₹2,90,000)
  • Premium (₹4,00,000+)

The honest verdict

Portugal in 2026 is the cheap door into Europe — the Schengen visa is the same as Spain or France, but you get gentler pricing once on the ground. The fado-and-port culture of Lisbon and Porto is genuinely distinctive; don’t skip the Douro Valley boat day for the river-vineyard views.

Best time to visit Portugal

The sweet spots are April to mid-June and September to October. July–August is hot and crowded, especially Algarve; January–February is grey in Porto but Lisbon stays mild and affordable. Visit Douro Valley wine country in September for harvest season — vineyards run grape-stomping events open to visitors.

Common mistakes Indian travellers make

Underestimating the hills. Lisbon and Porto are both built on steep hills with cobbled streets. Pack proper walking shoes — heels and new shoes will end your trip in 24 hours.

Skipping the Tram 28 alternatives. Tram 28 is pickpocket central. Take Tram 12 or 18 instead — same neighbourhoods, fewer crowds, same views.

Not booking Sintra Pena Palace in advance. Pena Palace tickets sell out at peak season. Book online 2 weeks ahead with a timed slot, and arrive early — the palace gets packed by 11 AM.

Eating only in tourist zones. Lisbon’s Baixa and Porto’s Ribeira have inflated tourist menus. Walk 10 minutes into local neighbourhoods (Lisbon’s Graça, Porto’s Bonfim) for proper tascas at half the price.

Money, SIM & connectivity

Portugal uses Euro. NOS and Vodafone Portugal sell tourist SIMs (€15–20 for 10GB). Multibanco ATMs are widespread and accept Indian debit cards with low fees. Carry €100–150 in cash for small cafes, tascas, and metro tickets — most other places accept Visa/Mastercard.

Packing checklist for Portugal

Walking shoes (essential), light layers for Atlantic breeze evenings, a light raincoat (especially Porto, October onwards), Type C/F adapter, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle (tap water is safe to drink everywhere in Portugal).

FAQs about Portugal for Indian travellers

Is the Portugal Schengen visa easy to get? Portugal has a relatively friendly Schengen approval rate for Indians compared to France or Germany. Apply through VFS Mumbai or Delhi 6–8 weeks before travel. Common rejection reasons: weak bank statements, no return ticket, no travel insurance.

Can I do Lisbon + Porto + Algarve in 7 days? Tight but doable: 2 nights Lisbon, 1 day Sintra, 2 nights Porto, 2 nights Algarve. We recommend skipping Algarve on a first trip and adding Douro Valley instead.

Vegetarian food in Portugal? Lisbon and Porto have excellent vegetarian options — bifanas can be replaced with grilled vegetables, pasteis de bacalhau replaced with cheese versions. Indian restaurants exist in both cities but are pricier than local food.

Is Portugal cheaper than Spain or Italy? Yes — accommodation and meals are 15–25% cheaper. A mid-range meal in Lisbon costs €15–20 vs €25 in Madrid.

Do I need to speak Portuguese? English works in tourist areas and major cities. Learn “obrigado/a” (thank you) and “bom dia” (good morning) — locals appreciate the effort.

Sample budget breakdown for Portugal (8 nights)

For two Indian travellers in 2026, a Lisbon–Sintra–Porto–Douro trip costs roughly: Return flights Delhi/Mumbai to Lisbon (1-stop): ₹70,000–90,000 per person. Lisbon hotels (3-star, Baixa or Alfama): ₹6,500–9,500 per night. Porto hotels: ₹5,500–8,000 per night. Inter-city train Lisbon–Porto on Alfa Pendular: ₹2,800 per person. Sintra day-trip (train + Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira tickets): ₹3,500 per person. Douro Valley wine tour (full day from Porto): ₹6,500 per person. Meals (mid-range): ₹2,800 per couple per day. Metro and tram passes: ₹1,200 per person for the trip. Total realistic per-person cost for 8 nights: ₹1.55–1.95 lakh, excluding shopping and Schengen visa fees.
