Vietnam: Hanoi old quarter and egg coffee

Posted on May 11, 2026May 11, 2026 by punyapaths

vietnam is one of the most affordable countries in asia. pho for 1 dollar. beer for 50 cents. hostels for 5 dollars. you can travel here for a month on what youd spend in a week in europe.

hanoi is chaotic beautiful. motorbikes everywhere. street food every corner. hoan kiem lake in the morning is peaceful. train street is wild. old quarter is a maze youll love getting lost in.

ha long bay is touristy but for good reason. the karst limestone islands rising from emerald water is unreal. book a 2 day cruise. you need the overnight to see the sunrise.

ho chi minh trail is the ultimate motorbike trip. from hanoi to saigon through the mountains. takes 2 weeks. best way to see real vietnam. the views are insane.

vietnamese coffee culture is serious. egg coffee. coconut coffee. black coffee with condensed milk. they dont mess around with their caffeine. ca phe sua da is my go to.

one thing i learned traveling is that the best stuff is unplanned. getting lost. taking wrong turns. saying yes to random invitations. thats where the magic happens.

if someone asks me should i go to Vietnam my answer is always yes. always. even if the timing isnt perfect. even if you dont have enough money. figure it out. you wont regret it.

the locals are what make it special. every shopkeeper wants to chat. every chai wallah has a story. these random encounters are what you remember years later not the hotels or the restaurants.
