slovenia: wait what i forgot to tell u about this insane place

Posted on May 12, 2026May 12, 2026 by punyapaths

ok so slovenia. where do i even START with this fucking place. so my friend was like yeah im going to slovenia and i was like where the hell is that even at?? turns out its that tiny country between italy and croatia and austria and hungary, like its literally the size of a postage stamp or smth idk, like u can drive across it in like 3 hours wtf. but omg its actually INSANE how much shit is packed in there.

so first of all lake bled. uve seen the pictures right? that lake with the tiny island and the church in the middle? yeah that one. its real. its actually real and it looks EXACTLY like the photos which is rare tbh cuz most places look like total shit irl compared to instagram. the water is like this weird greeny blue color that doesnt look natural at all, like someone dumped a fuckton of food coloring in there idk. u can row a boat out to the island which sounds romantic and shit but let me tell u its NOT romantic when ur sweating ur ass off and almost capsizing because u dont know how to row a boat properly. but then u get there and theres this church and u ring the bell and make a wish or whatever. i wished i hadnt eaten that huge sausage before getting in the boat honestly…

speaking of food. oh my god the food is so heavy. like every meal is just MEAT. and more meat. and then some bread and cheese and more meat. i had this thing called kremna rezina or smth at a cafe near the lake and HOLY SHIT. its like this cream cake thing with layers of custard and puff pastry and its so fucking good i had THREE of them in one day. no regrets. actually wait no i do regret it cuz i felt sick af after but whatever worth it.

the capital is loo-blee-ah-nuh or something i cant pronounce it right to save my life. ljubljana. lube-liana? luh-bluh-yana? who the fuck knows. but the city is actually beautiful. tiny little river running through it with these cute ass bridges and cafes everywhere. and theres this dragon bridge with literal dragons on it which makes sense cuz apparently dragons are on their coat of arms?? like the country’s symbol is literally a dragon. how cool is that. i was so excited about the dragons i took like 50 photos and then realized later half of them were just blurry pics of water.

ok rant over. no wait actually i havent even gotten to the best parts.

postojna cave. oh man. so i went to this cave system and its MASSIVE. like u take a little train inside the cave and it goes for fucking miles. theres these weird fish called baby dragons or smth in the water, theyre like blind little salamanders that live forever. i think they called them olms or proteus or something idk. its weird. but the cave itself is just… insane. stalactites and stalagmites everywhere and the whole place is lit up in different colors. felt like i was in a fucking alien movie or something. but its €25 or €30 or like some bullshit price idk i dont remember i just paid whatever they said.

then theres predjama castle which is literally BUILT INTO A CAVE MOUTH. like in the side of a cliff. WHY would anyone build a castle there?? apparently some guy named erasmus or something lived there and was a total badass who just chilled in his cave castle and laughed at everyone trying to attack him. tbh that energy is kinda iconic. i would also live in a cave castle if i could. the tour guide was saying something about a toilet that doubled as an escape route? like he could flush himself down into safety or whatever. i might be making that up. dont trust me on that one.

ok and the soca river. SOCA RIVER. this river has no right being that color. its like TURQUOISE. like someone photoshopped a river into real life. i sat there for like an hour just staring at it like a complete idiot. u can do rafting and stuff there which i did not do cuz i was too busy eating cream cake. priorities.

triglav national park is where all the mountains are. if ur into hiking and shit. i hiked like… one trail. for like 2 hours. and then i found a random mountain hut selling beer and just stayed there the rest of the day. best decision ever. the guy running it was this old slovenian dude who barely spoke english but he just kept pouring me wine and pointing at the mountains and nodding. i think we became best friends. i dont even remember his name. fuck.

wait what was i saying

oh yeah slovenia. so the thing is NO ONE talks about this country. like everyone goes to italy or croatia but slovenia is right there and its CHEAP AS HELL. like wine is like €3 for a bottle of house wine that is actually good. not like that vinegar they serve in american restaurants disguised as wine. actual wine. bread is like a euro. i had a full sit down meal with like soup and main and dessert and a beer and it was like €12. what the fuck. why doesnt everyone go here.

people are so nice too. like genuinely nice not fake nice. everyone speaks english like perfectly. like better than i do probably. i asked a bus driver for directions and he just gave me like a 10 minute explanation in perfect english and then drew me a map on a napkin. a bus driver. on a napkin. i still have the napkin somewhere.

ngl i also saw some weird stuff. like theres a bar in ljubljana called cutthroat bar or something where the whole theme is like… medieval torture? theres skeletons everywhere and you drink cocktails out of like test tubes and weird glasses. its pretty fucking dark but also fun as hell. also there was a random guy walking a pig on a leash near the castle. just casually. pig on a leash. nobody even looked at him. that was the moment i knew i loved this place.

also they have these things called “info points” everywhere which are basically tourist info booths but they call them info points which sounds very serious and official but then theres like one teenager inside who barely knows where the bathroom is. i asked about bus schedules and she just shrugged and pointed at a random wall. love that energy tbh.

oh and the weather is so unpredictable. like one minute its sunny and beautiful and ur thinking wow this is paradise and then ten minutes later it starts POURING rain and ur soaked and hiding under a tree and then twenty minutes later its sunny again. the weather here has bipolar disorder i swear to god.

ummmm what else. the train from ljubljana to bled is actually really pretty but the trains are like… old. like my ikea furniture has more structural integrity. but they get u there eventually. just dont expect wifi or working toilets or anything comfortable.

actually u know what. the thing about slovenia is it feels like a secret. like u found a cheat code for europe. its got all the beauty of switzerland or italy but without the crowds and without the prices. the only people u meet there are other people who ALSO accidentally saw it and we all just kinda nod at each other like “yeah we know” 🤷‍♂️

lake bled at sunrise is like… ok im not gonna be poetic about it cuz im not that kinda person but just trust me. get up at like 5am which is a fucking awful thing to do on vacation but do it. the mist over the lake and the island church thing… its something. i was gonna take a picture but i just stood there for 20 mins and forgot my phone existed. and im not the type of person who says shit like that.

Photo: Alan Wang/Pexels

ok im hungry now and theres no cream cake here so fuck this. just go. like literally book a flight rn. i dont care what else u have going on. slovenia waits for no one. actually it does wait cuz nobody goes there but u know what i mean.

fuck it just go ok
