Portugal was last minute. Best spontaneous decision. Lisbon surprised completely. Porto won me over. Good food. Real value.

Portugal Travel Guide – Essential Tips for First-Time Visitors

alright so you’re thinking about portugal? good choice. honestly one of the best decisions you’ll make. i’ve been there 3 times now and still feel like i barely scratched the surface. here’s the thing about portugal – it’s small but every corner has something unique. from the wine regions to the coastal cliffs, from historic lisbon to the hidden islands of azores. let me break it all down for you.

Getting Around Portugal

Lisbon to Porto: Train is the way. About 2h45m, costs €25-35. Book ahead on cp.pt for best prices. The Alfa Pendular is the fast one – worth the extra €5. Scenery is okay, nothing spectacular but you’ll see some olive groves and small towns.

Algarve coast: You’ll need a car or bus. Train goes but stops at every tiny village. Buses from Lisbon to Faro take 3h, cost €15-20. Once in Algarve, the train between towns is fine (Albufeira, Lagos, Portimão are all connected).

Renting a car: If you want to explore Douro Valley or Alentejo, get a car. €30-50/day. Manual is standard, automatic is more expensive. Roads are good but tolls are everywhere – make sure your rental has the electronic toll pass.

Where to Stay

Budget (€20-40/night): Hostels in Lisbon (Yes! Hostel is amazing), HomeStay, guesthouses in smaller towns. In Porto, The Independente Hostel is top rated.

Mid-range (€60-120/night): Boutique hotels everywhere. Look for places with terraces – portuguese sunsets are incredible. Lisbon’s Alfama neighborhood has great options. Porto’s Ribeira district is touristy but the views are worth it.

Luxury (€150+/night): Pestana, Tivoli, and the new Six Senses in Douro Valley. If you can swing it, stay at least one night in a wine hotel in Douro. Unreal experience.

Food You Must Try

pastel de nata – you’ll eat dozens of these. Manteigaria in Lisbon has the best. Don’t argue, just go.
bacalhau – codfish. they say 365 ways to cook it. i’ve tried maybe 10. all good.
francesinha – porto’s answer to a croque monsieur but on steroids. meat, cheese, egg, beer sauce. life changing and heart stopping.
grilled sardines – seasonal (june-september). find a street festival. eat with bare hands.
porto wine – obviously. rubies, tawnies, whites. Graham’s 10 year tawny is a perfect intro.
ginjinha – cherry liqueur. order “uma ginginha com elas” (with berries). shot form, €1 at A Ginjinha in Lisbon.

Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss

Óbidos: Walled medieval town 1h from Lisbon. Walk the walls, try the cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups. Perfect day trip.

Cascais: Not exactly hidden but most tourists go to Sintra only and skip this. Beautiful coastal town with a great promenade, beaches, and the Boca do Inferno rock formation.

Coimbra: University city with a vibe completely different from Lisbon/Porto. The fado here is more academic, less touristy. Biblioteca Joanina is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.

Packing Tips

layers layers layers. portugal weather is weird. sunny at 10am, rain at 11, sunny again at 12. pack a light jacket always. good walking shoes – lisbon is HILLY. the famous 28 tram is fun but slow. you’ll walk more than you expect. sunscreen even in winter. bring an umbrella.

Portugal is truly a country that rewards slow travel. Don’t try to see everything in one trip. Pick 2-3 regions and really soak them in. The people are warm, the food is incredible, and the landscape is stunning. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, a beach lover, or a wine enthusiast, Portugal has something special waiting for you. Just go with an open mind and an empty stomach – you’ll leave with both full.
