ok so slovenia. where even is it right?? like honestly before i went i cudnt point to it on a map. its like squeezed between italy austria hungry and croatia. smol country. teeny tiny. but holy SHIT it packs a punch.
also the river – ljubljanica – has these cute little cafes all along it. i sat at one for like 2 hours just watching ppl go by. had some kinda iced coffee that was 3.50€. in this economy??? insane. also saw a guy paddleboarding with his DOG on the board. i have no proof but i also have no doubt.
ok random tangent – theres this bridge called the triple bridge. its literally just three bridges next to each other. why? idk but its iconic. also the dragon bridge with these angry looking green dragons on each corner. slovenians love their dragons. who can blame them honestly.
food time. holy FUCK the food. so theres this thing called kranjska klobasa which is basically a sausage but like… the BEST sausage u will ever have. i ate three in one day. no shame. also struklji – imagine rolled dumplings with cheese or walnuts or whatever. i had the walnut one and i think i actually ascended. also they put pumpkin seed oil on EVERYTHING. salads, bread, ice cream even. and it slaps.
price wise its cheaper than italy or austria next door but not like thailand cheap. hostel dorm was like 25€ a night. meal at a normal restaurant maybe 12-15€. beer like 3-4€. so like mid range but SO worth it. i spent like 500€ in a week. idk exactly i stopped counting after day 3. my math was never my strong suit nd honestly whos judging.
oh wait i forgot the most important part – LAKE BLED. ok so lake bled is this ridiculously perfect lake with a tiny little island in the middle with a church on it. and theres a castle on a cliff overlooking everything. it looks fake. i swear to god it looks like someone photoshopped it. i took like 200 photos and none of them do it justice.
u can row a boat to the island. its like 15€ for a rowboat or something. i shared w two random australian girls who were also traveling solo. we rowed to the island rang the bell in the church (apparently it brings good luck) and then ate the famous bled cream cake at a cafe nearby. the cake is called kremna rezina and it is a religious experience. puff pastry, custard, cream. simple. perfect. i had two.
the water is so clear u can see fish. and the mountains in the background??? insaneee. locals swim in it in summer. i didnt bc i forgot my swimsuit like an idiot but next time.
slovenia is also insanely green. like GREEN green. they call themselves the green heart of europe and its not just marketing. theres forests everywhere, the water is clean enough to drink from some taps (my travel buddy did this i was too scared lol), and they have this thing called “green cap” or whatever for sustainable tourism. ngl most countries talk about sustainability but slovenia actually does it.
also the mountains. if ur into hiking (i am not usually but i tried) – triglav national park is mindblowing. i did a day hike to the soca river valley. the water is like… emerald green. literally the most unreal color ive ever seen in natural water. i thought it was edited in photos. nope. real. theres a gorge called tolminka and u walk on platforms over this turquoise water. i almost cried tbh.
local tip i learned from a random old man at a bus stop – dont bother w organized tours. just take a bus to bled or bohinj from ljubljana. its like 5€. the buses are actually decent? was not expecting that. also he said “slovenia is small but wide”. whatever that means. i think he meant theres lots to do. or maybe he was just high. who knows.
ok logistics – getting there. i flew into venice and took a shuttle which was like 55€ one way. also theres direct trains from venice and vienna and zagreb. ljubljana airport exists but flights from budget airlines can be hit or miss. i got a ryanair deal for like 40€ from london so look out for those. also theres flixbus to everywhere.
ppl speak english really well. like almost everyone under 40. so dont stress about the language. “dober dan” means hello. “hvala” means thanks. “eno pivo prosim” is one beer please. the last one is the only one i perfected tbh.
bohinj lake > bled lake fight me. bled is beautiful but SO touristy. bohinj is like bleds chill cousin. less crowds, more nature, actually swimmable. i spent a whole day there just reading a book and swimming. perfect day. zero regrets.
the wine scene surprised me. slovenia makes amazing wine. like REALLY good. i went to a wine bar in ljubljana called something i forget but the guy gave me a tasting of like 6 local wines for 12€. had some orange wine (natural wine w skin contact). wasnt sure at first but by the 3rd glass i was a convert. they also do wine from the goriska brda region which is basically slovenias tuscany.
ngl i went in november which is like off season. weather was chilly but not freezing. like 5-10°C. almost no tourists at bled which was incredible. i basically had the lake to myself. downside – some restaurants close outside summer. but the coziness made up for it. every place has a wood stove and its so warm and nice.
oh and the caves. POSTOJNA CAVE. its this massive cave system and u ride a little train INSIDE the mountain. feels like a disney ride but real. also they have these weird transparent salamanders called “human fish” bc their skin is pale like human skin?? idk weird shit. but cool weird. the cave goes on for like 21km or something insane. u only see like 5km of it. still worth it.
also predjama castle. its a castle BUILT INTO A CAVE WALL. literally inside a cliff. a knight lived there in the 1400s and he was some kinda outlaw i think. the vibes are immaculate. honestly just imagining living in a cave castle makes me want to give up modern life and move there.
anyway rant over. summary – slovenia is underrated as fuck. its like if switzerland and italy had a baby but it was affordable and nobody knew about it. go now before everyone discovers it and prices go up. lake bled, ljubljana, triglav national park, the food, the wine, the dragons. just go.
also for real dont forget to try the pumpkin seed oil ice cream. yes thats a thing. it tastes like nutty vanilla magic. u can thank me later.
pros: cheap (for europe), beautiful everywhere, clean, safe, english spoken
cons: nobody knows where it is, some places close early, i fell in love w a country i cant live in
10/10 would move here if my job let me work from a cave castle. honestly considering it.
p.s. if ur vegetarian its fine. loads of options. struklji, pumpkin soup, mushroom dishes. my veggie friend survived and thrived.
p.p.s. bring comfy shoes. cobblestones will destroy ur instagram sneakers. i lost a shoe to ljubljana. rip.
p.p.p.s. the train from ljubljana to lake bled takes like an hour and costs 6€. the views out the window are also incredible. dont sleep on the train.
ok signing off slovenia u beautiful weird country i will be back.
