ok so slovenia wasnt even on my list. honestly id barely heard of it. saw some random photo of lake bled on instagram and was like where even IS that. turns out its this tiny country wedged between italy and austria. and omg im so glad i went bc it completely surprised me.
landed in ljubljana (still cant pronounce it right lol) and the airport is TINY. like smaller than some bus stations ive been to. but you know what? customs was 5 minutes and i was out. none of that 2-hour airport hell. already winning.
took a bus straight to bled. about an hour, maybe 90 mins? costs pocket change, like €3-4. the drive there is beautiful, these rolling hills and cute houses everywhere. slovenia is GREEN. like absurdly green. makes sense why they call it a hidden gem i guess.

LAKE BLED. ok. so this is the famous spot and i get it now. you walk up and theres this emerald green lake with a PERFECT little island in the middle. on that island: a church. sounds fake right? but its real and its gorgeous. the whole thing looks staged. like someone painted it.
you can do several things here. rent a rowboat and go to the island (€15/hr, worth it). take a traditional pletna boat (€16 roundtrip, someone else rows). or just walk around the entire lake which takes about an hour. i did all three bc fomo.
the island itself has 99 stairs. supposedly if you ring the church bell your wish comes true. i wished for my camera to not die. it didnt. so maybe it works lol.

then theres bled castle up on a cliff. you can hike it or drive. i hiked bc im cheap and also stubborn. decent view. €11 entry. restaurant up there with an incredible overlook. got a coffee. overpriced but the view was free so.
NEXT DAY: vintgar gorge. this might have been my favorite part honestly. you walk on these wooden boardwalks RIGHT next to crystal clear water. like absurdly clear, you can see every fish. for maybe 1.5km. the water is this crazy turquoise color. photos dont do it justice. entrance fee €10, totally worth it.

back to ljubljana for a day. cute capital. really walkable. they blocked cars from the center so its just pedestrians and café’s everywhere. had a coffee by the river for €2.50. TWO FIFTY. in a european capital. insane.
the castle in ljubljana is free if you walk up. took me 20 mins. good views of the city. nothing mindblowing, but nice.
OTHER STUFF i didnt have time for but heard good things:
– postojna cave (has a TRAIN inside?? wild)
– skocjan caves (massive underground canyon)
– piran (coastal town, supposed to be venice vibes)
– triglav national park if you like hiking

MONEY TALK:
slovenia uses euros but its shockingly affordable. cheaper than italy or austria by a lot. hostel €18-25/night. food €10-15 for decent meal. gelato €2.50. you can do 5 days on €350 including everything if youre smart about it. flights from within europe are cheap. from india/tbhes with connection maybe €400-600 roundtrip.
BEST TIME TO GO:
may to september. i went early september and weather was perfect. cool mornings, warm days, no crowds. july-august gets busy i heard. winter is for skiing apparently but lakes might not hit the same when everythings frozen.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
slovenia is underrated af. everyone skips it for croatia or italy or austria. their loss. its like if switzerland and austria had a budget-friendly baby. same vibes, fraction of the cost. perfect for solo travelers, couples, families. safe, clean, efficient.
total spent for 5 days: about €380 including flights from italy where i was already working. would i go back? absolutely. maybe in winter next time to see those mountains covered in snow. heard the skiing is good and way cheaper than the alps.

PRACTICAL TIPS
Getting around: Buses connect major spots but arent super frequent. Rent a car if you want freedom. €30-40/day. Gas is pricey but distances are short so you wont burn much.
Food: Try kremšnita (cream cake) in bled. Its famous. Get it at any café near the lake. €3-4. Also štruklji – rolled dumpling things. Hearty. Good for cold days.
Sim card: Got one at the airport for €10. 10GB. Worked everywhere. Coverage in mountains was better than expected.
Accommodation: Hostels in ljubljana are social. Met people there who became hiking buddies. Hotels in bled are pricier but you’re paying for the view basically.
Safety: Never felt unsafe. Solo female travelers everywhere. Police are helpful. Standard europe stuff tbh.
Language: Everyone under 40 speaks english. Older folks might not but hand gestures work. Slovenians are patient like that.
ONE WEEK ITINERARY
Day 1: Land in ljubljana. Explore old town. Coffee by river.
Day 2: Lake bled. Island + castle. Sunsets here are insane.
Day 3: Vintgar gorge morning. Afternoon relax in bled.
Day 4: Postojna or skocjan caves. Pick one. Both good.
Day 5: Ljubljana deeper dive. Museums, markets, food.
Day 6: Day trip to piran (coast) or triglav national park.
Day 7: Head out. Or stay longer bc you’ll want to.
Bottom line: Slovenia punches way above its weight. Tiny country, massive payoff. Skip it and you’re missing out on one of europe’s best kept secrets.
