Varanasi Travel: What Actually Matters

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Summer 2026

bro, Leh Ladakh is NOT a trip. It’s a whole vibe change. Mountains taller than your problems, air so thin you forget your own name, and roads that make you question your life choices. Ngl, I’m still recovering. But here’s everything you need to know, straight up.

getting there

leh ladakh

Two ways. First: fly. Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Direct flights from Delhi. Costs around 8k-12k INR one way. Second: road trip. Manali to Leh via the Leh-Manali Highway. That’s 490 km of pure madness. Took me 2 days. Stop at Keylong or Sarchu for the night. If you’re coming from Srinagar, the Srinagar-Leh Highway is 434 km. Both roads open only May to October. Don’t be a hero in winter. Trust me, bro.

where to stay

leh ladakh

Leh town has everything. Budget: Zostel or The Grand Dragon. Hostel bed? 800-1000 INR per night. Private room? 1500-2500 INR. For luxury, go for The Grand Dragon or Vida Luxury. That’s 5k-7k per night. Outside Leh? Nubra Valley has homestays for 1200 INR. Pangong Tso? Tent accommodation near the lake is 2k-3k. Book ahead in peak season (June-August). Or sleep in your car. Not recommended.

what to eat

leh ladakh

You’ll eat a lot of momos. And thukpa (noodle soup). And butter tea. Bro, the food is simple but hits different. Leh Market has a place called “The Tibetan Kitchen”. Try their momos and tingmo (steamed bread). For fancy stuff, “Amigo” has decent pizza. But ngl, the best meal I had was roadside maggi in Nubra. Spicy, salty, life-saving. Budget for food: 500-800 INR per day. Carry ORS packets. Altitude kills appetite.

things to do

leh ladakh

Too many. Start with Leh Palace. Old school, free view. Then Shanti Stupa for sunset. Then go for the big stuff: Khardung La Pass (highest motorable road in India, 18,380 ft). You’ll feel dizzy. It’s normal. Nubra Valley: drive there, see sand dunes, ride a double-humped camel. Pangong Tso: blue lake, 150 km from Leh. Stay one night there. The stars are unreal. Tso Moriri: quieter, cheaper than Pangong. For adventure, do the Chadar Trek (frozen river) in Jan-Feb. Or river rafting in Zanskar. Also just driving the Khardung La road is a thing. Bro, just go.

budget (INR)

leh ladakh

Breakdown for 7 days, per person:

Flight from Delhi: 10k (return). Road trip from Manali: 3k-4k (bus + taxi). Accommodation: 1500 per night x 7 = 10,500 (mid-range). Food: 700 per day x 7 = 4,900. Transport inside Ladakh: taxi or bike rental. Bike rental: 1,500-2,000 per day. Taxi for Pangong/Nubra: 8k-12k for 3-4 days. Entry fees: 500-1000 total (monasteries, passes). Total: 25k-35k for budget. 40k-50k for comfort. Bro, you can do it cheaper if you hostel and hitchhike. I did 22k once.

tips

leh ladakh

First rule: acclimatize. Land in Leh, don’t do shit for 24 hours. Just chill

. Drink water. Eat ginger. Second: carry diamox. Altitude sickness is real. Headaches, nausea, bad sleep. Take 125 mg twice a day. Third: sunscreen. SPF 50. Even in clouds. Fourth: cash. ATMs in Leh only. No digital payments in remote areas. Fifth: permits. You need ILP for Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri. Get it online or from Leh DC office. 600 INR per person. Sixth: phone signal. Only BSNL works in most places. Jio and Airtel are useless. Seventh: pack layers. Day time hot, night time freezing. A good jacket is non-negotiable. Eighth: don’t drive if you’ve never done mountain roads. Hire a local driver. It’s worth it.

faq

leh ladakh

Q: Is Leh Ladakh safe for solo travel? Yes bro. Very safe. People are chill. Just avoid walking alone at night in Leh town. But generally, no issues.

Q: Best time to go? May to September. June-August is peak. September has fewer crowds. October is cold but empty.

Q: Do I need a guide? Not for Leh town. For treks or high passes, yes. Hire a local guide. 1500-2000 per day.

Q: Can I drive my own car? If you have experience, yes. But roads are rough. A 4×4 is best. I saw hatchbacks struggle. Don’t be that guy.

Q: Is the internet good? Lol no. Leh town has decent Wi-Fi in hotels. Outside? Forget it. Enjoy the offline life.

Q: What about health issues? Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is real. Symptoms: headache, dizziness, vomiting. Descend immediately if severe. Leh has a hospital. Carry oxygen cans (500-800 INR).

Q: How many days needed? Minimum 7 days. 10 days is better. 14 days if you want to relax and do all treks.

Q: Can I do it on a bike? Yes. Royal Enfield is the king. Rent one in Leh for 2k per day. But bro, wear gear. Roads are unpredictable.

Q: Is it expensive? It’s not cheap. But not crazy. Mid-range trip costs 30k-40k for a week. Flights make it pricier. Road trip is cheaper.

Q: Any cultural rules? Don’t point your feet at people or statues. Don’t touch monks. Ask before taking photos. Respect local customs.

Q: Is it worth it? Bro. 100%. I’ve been twice. Going again next year. The silence at Pangong Tso at 4 AM is worth every rupee. Just go.
